When my children were growing up, we often had our regular Friday evening dinner at chi char stalls in kopitiams or hawker centres in HDB estates near our home. Besides Ghim Moh and Dover Estate, two other places that we liked were the Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre at Commonwealth Drive and the coffee shop at Block 31, Holland Close. We liked these places for two reasons.
1) In these old HDB estates, there were ample convenient parking places just next to the eating place. You simply cannot find such spacious car parks in the modern HDB estates where they have been replaced by multi-storey car parks.
2) There are always children playgrounds nearby. One disadvantage of living in a private estate is that the government does not bother to build such facilities for the presumably well-to-do residents. Hence, my children could play in the children’s playground whilst we wait for our orders to arrive.
