My Dearest Family
My paternal grandfather, Viswanathan Kandiah and my paternal grandmother, Soorna Ratnam came to Singapore from India in early 1920s. Grandpa Wiswanathan worked at Keppel Harbour loading and unloading goods at the dock. My father, Mr Kandiah Mahendran used to tell us that Keppel Harbour was named Pulau Hantu or ‘Ghost Island’ before 1983.I am very proud of my paternal grandfather as he ensured that his son had a good education though he did not earn much during those days. He knew the importance of education even in the early days.

After many months of courting, they finally got married and my mother came over to Singapore in the 1950s. My father studied in Raffles Institution and his idol was Mr Lee Kuan Yew then. He used to share with us(his children) the story of how he sewed a new coat when he knew he was going to meet Mr Lee Kuan Yew at the Istana then. The photo he took with Mr Lee Kuan Yew was a special souvenir and it is still kept by the family up to today.

My mother, Mrs Mahendran, became a Singapore citizen later and she is proud of her citizenship. She enjoys cooking local dishes like chilli crab and chicken rice balls in a traditional way. She also makes desserts like green bean soup, pulut hitam and payasam(Indian dessert) which she shares with her neighbours and friends.

My brother, Mahendran Selvendran, born on 11 October 1962. He works at the Gardens by the Bay. He had an interesting birth as my parents saved a pregnant cow that had fallen into a canal at Opera Estate a few days before he was born. Their act was featured in the Straits Times on Monday, 24 September 1962.It is a very interesting article as kind words were used to rescue the pregnant cow.
