Damon Chua (1965) is a New York based playwright and poet, whose latest anthology _Traveler's Tale and Other Poems_, is published by Ethos Books. The poem, “Katong”, written in 1986, deals with his family's connection to the east coast, and recalls a time when the seashore was much closer than it is now.

katong
by Damon Chua

the land has claimed
sea here

it was the house
my grandmother labored,
peranakan scented its
inlaid furniture
as war-shorn
windows framed
a rebuilt chapel;
no more will tembusus
sway in the seabreezed evenings –
the marina parades,
between old man and
the sea
